Drama Drive

Yes, I live on it. Sometimes it can be fun other times it can drive a person to drink Mountain Dew by the gallons. For those of you who have not met my daughter Payton, she is a very brightand articulate 6 year old. And sometimes she challenges me as a mother, most times she challenges me. Then there are other times she makes me very proud to be her mother.

Recently, Payton had a problem with one of the kids in her class. This boy told her that black people were bad and cannot be friends with white people. As a mother this hurt me a lot because I was not there to protect her. I asked her how this made her feel, she went on to tell me this: "I feel bad for him mommy, I told him that a long time ago Dr. Martin Luther King said all people are equal and can play together. It does not matter what color you are." This brought a tear to my eye. I was happy that she listens to the things her father and I teach her, I was also happy she could stand up for herself. I know that it is hard enough to have children as it is but multi-racial children have it a little harder sometimes. We have always taught Payton that who she is as a person is far more important then what other think about the color of her skin. We have taught all of our children to be proud of who they are and where they come from. This time it was just nice to see Payton was not going to let some little kid who was not taught the best things change who she is. I hope she is always this way. Standing your ground can be a great thing. She does it a lot especially when I tell her to clean her room. My little African American, Polish, Irish, German Princess. I LOVE HER!
